Weaving with threads during Qingming Festival

Time: 2025-04-03

On the Qingming rain, willows sway gently. In this traditional festival of cherishing the distant past, we are accustomed to expressing our grief with flowers, paper money, and candles, but have you ever thought about weaving a longer commemoration with yarn?

In traditional Chinese culture, yarn is not only the material for weaving, but also the bond of emotions.

-Knot Notes - Ancient people used knots to record important events, just as we use photos to preserve memories today.

-Every stitch and thread carries the artist's focus and deep affection.

During the Qingming Festival, there was a custom of "weaving willow threads" in the Jiangnan area. People used willow branches and colored threads to weave bracelets, symbolizing blessings and disaster prevention. In modern times, we can also weave a unique Qingming memory with soft yarn.

Traditional sacrificial methods often involve burning, while yarn is a more environmentally friendly expression:

01

natural material

Using cotton, linen, and bamboo fiber yarn, naturally degradable and environmentally friendly.

02

Long term retention

The woven works of yarn are not easily damaged and can last longer than flowers or paper money.

03

Reduce waste

Handmade to avoid excessive consumption and make Qingming greener.

On this Qingming Festival, let's temporarily bid farewell to electronic screens and pick up needles and thread. Whether it's learning a new weaving technique or repairing an ancestral knitted item, it's the best tribute to traditional culture. The other end of the yarn is connected to the warmth of the ancestors, while this end is tied to the memories of future generations. When the thousand sails are gone, these objects woven by hands will eventually become the most precious heirlooms - because they not only record who we are, but also remind us of where we come from.

Yarn must undergo "death" (disassembly) to obtain "rebirth" (recombination). As described by the writer Shen Congwen in "Border Town," the ferryman spent his entire life weaving, dismantling, and weaving the never-ending fishing net. Isn't life just such a cyclical weaving?

Using yarn to express emotions, making longing last longer

Qingming is not only a festival of remembrance, but also the beginning of a new life.

Using every stitch and thread, weaving longing into time, allowing memories to continue in a gentler way.
